Choosing points
- Best for walls, ceilings, exterior cladding, and Japanese natural interiors where light soft wood is wanted.
- Untreated cedar grays outdoors, especially in sun and rain.
- Boards vary strongly from pale yellow to reddish brown.
- Charred cedar reads black but still has wood grain and cracked texture.
How it ages
- Naturally more decay resistant than many softwoods, but end grain, ground contact, and trapped moisture remain weak points.
What to avoid
- Do not use soft cedar where hard floor wear, chair legs, or impact resistance are required unless denting is acceptable.
